The NFL’s favorite pet project got some more hype today with the announcement of 3 new games to be played in London next season.
The match ups announced should actually be quality games with playoff contenders as the teams being sent across the pond. The series will start on October 14th with the Seahawks and Raiders as British fans will be treated to the return of Chucky on the sideline for Oakland.
After that, two more straight weeks of match ups will be played on the 21st and 28th. The Eagles will square off against the Jaguars and the Titans against the Chargers. Dolphin fans can rest easy knowing that their team was spared the trip this year.
The games are actually very high quality match ups on paper, but that is not the problem here. The problem is the NFL continues to force these games down our throats when none of the players or coaches want to take that trip and no one likes the 9 am eastern time starts as well.
Going to London for one week screws up the entire schedule for a team. They are leaving earlier in the week and getting home later. The entire routine has to change for that one week, and if it is one thing players and coaches hate to change, it is their routine. Plus, it is a huge undertaking for an organization to make that trip, a lot has to happen behind the scenes to make it work.
I understand that the NFL wants a team in London and wants to spread the brand around the globe, but everyone hates these games. And for the home teams traveling, the season ticket holders here in the US lose a game. Just ask Dolphin fans how much they have enjoyed losing home games the past few seasons.
The NFL is going to continue this trend for the foreseeable future. And it could get worse with the possible expansion overseas, that would mean 8 teams would have to travel to London every season for away games. That being said, I think enough is enough here NFL.
