It’s an upcoming season full of expectations for both the Hurricanes and the Owls. Both teams coming off of successful 2017 campaigns and returning big named starters.
Two of those starters have been recognized by ESPN in their top 50 players of 2018 list. Shaq Quarterman of Miami and Devin Singletary of FAU came in at numbers 48 and 50 respectively.
Quarterman had 83 tackles a year ago and picked up the most votes among linebackers on the preseason All-ACC team. He is one of the main cogs of a defense that includes Jaquan Johnson and one of the most valuable pieces to a Canes team that looks to improve on their 10-3 season from a year ago that saw them lose to Clemson in the ACC title game.
Shaq is a Junior and is most likely playing his final season in a Miami uniform. He is currently ranked on Mel Kiper’s fabled big board as the 2nd best underclassman for inside linebackers.
Meanwhile, with Devin Singletary, FAU will go as far as he is able to carry them. That’s how important he is. Motor, as they call him, led the nation with 32 rushing touchdowns last season. That is impressive no matter the competition you are playing against. They have even started a Heisman campaign, yes, that’s right, a Heisman campaign for an FAU player. It has been dubbed “Heisman in Paradise” and highlights all of Singletary’s accomplishments.
There probably isn’t a Heisman in Boca Raton’s future, but this is definitely a guy to look out for. Both players could very well be on their way to All-American seasons.
