The preseason finally gets underway tonight for the Miami Dolphins with tonight’s game vs the Bucs. Yes, finally football is back! I know it’s only preseason, but hey, it’s still football. And with that, there are some lingering questions that hang in the air like the thick humidity of a Miami Summer night.
Such as, how long will/should Tannehill play? I think there are two different answers to those questions. He will most likely end up playing a series or two just to get his feet wet and reacclimated to a semblance of game speed. But how long should he play? It should be the entire first quarter in my opinion.
I understand you want to avoid injury at all costs, but this is a guy who has not played a down of football in a year and a half. He needs the reps and he needs them now. I’d like to see him get more playing time on the front end of the season rather than seeing him play into the 4th preseason game. Tannehill needs live snaps and the Dolphins should give those to him tonight.
Another question is how will the O-line look? Are they going to be able to get some actual protection around Tannehill this season? Can they open up running lanes to allow Kenyan Drake to pick up where he left off last year? And how about the secondary? We keep hearing good things about this group coming out of practice. It will be interesting to see what type of role the 11th overall pick, Minkah Fitzpatrick will have in this first game.
The secondary has been picking off balls left and right in practice thus far, and most of those are coming from my next question. Brock freakin Osweiler. That bum has thrown 6 picks in practice so far. This will be the time to see if either he or David Fales can step it up in a backup role, or if the Dolphins need to go QB shopping.
Then finally, keep an eye out to see how the Dolphins use Mike Gesicki tonight. Gesicki is the tight end they drafted out of Penn St. and all early indications are pointing to this guy being a steal for the Phins. Comparisons are already being made to Greg Olsen, that’s how good he could be.
Football is back! Bring it on baby.
